Katannilik Territorial Park
Up first, a perfect introduction to this land: tour the territorial capital of Nunavut with a welcoming Nunavummiuq (Nunavut resident) as your guide. Engage with your friendly host, discovering insights about daily life in this unique Inuit community. Uncover fascinating local history as you tour the snowy street, from the settlement of Frobisher Bay to the official formation of Nunavut, to today. This excursion is tailored to your interests, perhaps after your tour, you’ll stop at Unikkaarvik Visitor Centre or Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, or visit boutique shops to peruse wares crafted by Nunavut’s many working artists.
At the helm of your own snowmobile, set out on a legendary adventure! Once you cross ice-covered Frobisher Bay, you will come upon the Meta Incognita Peninsula (land of the unknown limits). The trail snakes along over 100 km (62 mi) across Katannilik Territorial Park (where there are waterfalls), the largest territorial park in Nunavut, and ends in the Soper River Valley, surrounded by its high desert plateaux. Perhaps you’ll see the Northern Lights dance in waves of green across an inky sky.
After a full day of snowmobiling, you will arrive at a large, heated group cabin where you will spend the night. Astride your snowmobiles once again on the second morning, you will head for Kimmirut (close to 165km (102 mi) from Iqaluit), crossing through the dwarf-willow forest (the only trees on Baffin Island). Once in the community, we can fill up with gas and tour this friendly, traditional community.
Kimmirut is a small village with close to 389 inhabitants, located on the southern end of Baffin Island. The Kimmirummiutait (Kimmirut residents) are known for their hospitable and welcoming character. We then head back to the group cabin before sunset for a well-needed rest, before heading out on the third morning for the long but exciting return expedition to Iqaluit.
You have left behind the well-trodden path, you’re on a Bucket List adventure with Inukpak Outfitting.
Experience our private, all-inclusive Iqaluit – Kimmirut Snowmobile Expedition program. This best-selling trip includes: accommodation, ground transportation, expedition-grade apparel and footwear, guided expeditions and more.
